. just appointed chair of the president's council of economic advisers. thank you for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> thank you very much. i want to ask you what's just happened. the house minority leader, john boehner said he would consider extending the middle class tax cuts. if the only option i have is to vote for some of those tax reductions, i'll vote for it, he said, on "face the nation" this morning. what is your reaction? >> i haven't seen the comments. i noticed the qualifier if my only choice is. if he -- if he's truly saying that we can, as the president called for, get a broad consensus to extend the middle class tax cuts, we should do it. we shouldn't hold that hostage for the argument about the tax cuts just for the very, very highest income people. if he's for that, i would happy. in the past, we have seen some of these circumstances in which what appears to be the offer of doing the sensible thing in the light of day, there's a little bit of a feeling of, well if the president's for it, i'm against it, then it falls apart. >> he does obviously say he's

children's generation will be better than it was for us? 66% to not confident. is america in a state of decline? 65% believe the country is in a state of decline. how do you combat that? >> it is tough to do. america has historically, internationally, been the home of national optimism. this is the most optimistic place on the place of the earth -- face of the earth. optimism breeds confidence. whether you want to take a chance on the gi bill, air, water, pollution acts that may difference -- the people that lack optimism, there is a sense of hunkering down. i cannot be concerned about other people. it makes me more self test, self-absorbed. it has a political ripple effect. i do not think that has been totally calculated. >> the president says we will put money into infrastructure. john boehner says we are going to cut taxes and government spending. how does that instill confidence in the american people? >> it does not compute. this is all meant to benefit the economic system, but how does it affect me? they do not feel it. both sides, politicians, they have really lost some credib
